When we are challenged with an adverse or opposing situation, fear is usually the first thing to surface. While the experience of fear is not wrong in itself, it is how we respond to fear that matters. It is important to note that to walk by faith doesn’t mean there is an absence of fear because there will be times when we need to continue walk by the truth in spite of fear. But if we continue to entertain or submit to our fears we can lose sight of the truth of God’s Word and fear can easily overwhelm us. When this occurs and we react only to the natural circumstances, we may not experience the breakthrough we need. We therefore need to learn how to recognise and overcome fear so that we don’t lose sight of the truth or give up hope, but rather continue to act on who we are in Christ and on what we are believing for.
Replace Fear with Faith!
To have lasting victory over fear we need to replace our fears by meditating on the truth of what God’s Word says about who we are in Christ, what we have already received and God’s unconditional love for us. If we don’t, then fear will deceive us into believing in and giving into the strength of the natural situation. We need to trust what God has already established for us in His Word because when we believe the truth the devil has no more ammunition. Even God trusts His Word. He has exalted His Word above His name (Ps 138:2). But don’t simply quote scripture - the power of God is released when you believe His Word, act on it by declaring that truth, and exercise His power and authority over the situation!
God’s Medicine for Fear
I encourage you to meditate on the following scriptures, which deal with the subject of fear, along with those that describe who you are in Christ. Continue to renew your mind with them and make them personal to you by speaking them out as a confession over your life.
What God Says…
Is 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Josh 1:9 Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. (Deut 31:6 Similar)
Prov 1:33 Whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.
1 John 4:18 (NKJV) There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
What You Can Say…
Let the Redeemed of the Lord say so!
Begin to confess the following scriptures over your life!
God is my refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore I will not fear. Ps 46:1-2
I will not be afraid but I will trust in God and what His Word says. What can mortal man do to me? Ps 56:3-4
In righteousness I am established: tyranny will be far from me; I have nothing to fear. Terror will be far removed; it will not come near me. Is 54:14
God did not give me a spirit of timidity - of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear - but He has given me a spirit of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control. 2 Tim 1:7 (Amp)
